avoid the trash can

With U.S. unemployment rates over 7% last month, the need to distinguish yourself from other applicants is more important than ever. Hiring managers are overwhelmed with resume submissions and are in a position to hold applicants to the highest standards. With so many applicants to choose from, a hiring manager has no incentive to overlook a simple error on a resume. Typos, poor grammar, or other simple errors can land your otherwise impressive resume in the trash can.

Review your resume for common errors such as inadvertently choosing an incorrect homophone. Other words may not sound alike, but are also commonly misused so be sure that you verify usage when in doubt. Remember, if the word is spelled correctly but misused, the error will not be detected by spellcheck.

Commonly Misused Words that Might Be on Your Resume:

  • adverse, averse
  • affect, effect
  • appraise, apprise
