online networking etiquette

No longer confined to the 18th green or an exclusive social club, the Internet has made networking an accessible strategy for any job seeker with wi-fi access. When using online networking tools and websites it's important to keep the following networking etiquette in mind.
  • PERSONALIZE
When requesting a connection or a recommendation that requires a time investment from a colleague or former supervisor, demonstrate advanced appreciation by personalizing the note and request. Your request is more likely to be honored if you've taken the time to personalize your note rather than using the auto-generated message. You can also take this opportunity to remind the individual of your past connection or your specific role/contribution to the organization.

  • GIVE THANKS
For every online recommendation you receive, be sure to take the time to thank your endorser. For a short online thumb's up, an email of gratitude is appropriate. If someone provides a more formal, lengthy recommendation a handwritten note should be sent.

  • RECIPROCATE
Networking is about two-way connections and reciprocating assistance. Make sure you are as accessible to other job-seekers as you hope your valuable connections will be for you. When someone provides a recommendation, be sure to offer one for them as well. If someone has given you a head's up for a job opening at a company, keep them in mind should an attractive opportunity relevant to them should arise. Networking thrives on the "pass it on" ideology.
JOBSLAY strategy: When leaving a job, make sure you record the contact info of all friendly colleagues and supervisors for future networking needs.
