Many applicants may edit their resume numerous times but never think to review the section of the resume that is typically read first-the resume header. Don't neglect to consider the importance of every section of your resume even if it only consists of your name and contact information.
bigger is not better
Your name can be in a slightly larger font, but should not dominate your resume. While not intended, having your name as a large, bold headline can imply self-centeredness. Too large of a font for your name also suggests that you didn't have enough quality information to fill your page otherwise.
avoid a mailstrom
Unemployed and couch hopping? Moving out of your frat house for the summer? Live with unreliable roommates who often lose your mail? Consider getting a PO Box just for job hunting purposes. Some employers still use snail mail for follow-up correspondence or to send you an employment application. Don't let missed mail maul your future.
rrring!
When actively job hunting be cognizant of the way you answer the phone. "Whaddya want?," "Talk to me," and "Yo!" are examples of inappropriate options. The first call from a recruiter could be your first test on phone etiquette. When in doubt, "Hello, this is [your name]" is always a good choice. In a loud area? With your current boss? Let your phone go to voicemail so that you can return the call at a more appropriate time.
at the other end of your digits
Don't forget the importance of a professional voicemail greeting for the phone number you list on your resume. A phoning recruiter won't want to hear a "shout-out" to your buds or a pop song littered with foul language. Make the employer leave you a message by having a friendly, yet professional voice mail greeting.

When listing your contact information in your resume header, do not use an unprofessional email address that could give a hiring manager the wrong impression. Email accounts from Google and Yahoo are free so there's no excuse not to have an appropriate email address even if you have to create a new one just for your resume needs. JOBSLAY customers can also request a FREE your_name@JOBSLAY.com email address!
